It's time to share something I've TRIED with my BBB Holly for her Tried It Tuesday linky party! Great ideas that have been tested by others will be found on her linky parties!
To help keep my students accountable and to help me monitor their reading, I do a quick check using Status of the Class (what are we reading?). I started this last year in my classroom and I found it very beneficial. Here is an example of my chart (minus student names and the second page).
I write the date, title of the book, and page number. If the book hasn't changed the next time I do Status of the Class, I just add the page number.
It's a super quick, efficient way to check in on my readers. At the end of our reading block, I just quickly call their name for them to report what page they're on of their current book. If they've switched books, they notify me of that too. I call them in alphabetical order, so they are ready for their name to be called. I do a quick check with my students several times a week-it takes just a couple of minutes and gives me important information. I can assess if they're reading at home by the number of pages read, if their book is an appropriate reading level, and if they're completing or abandoning books too often.
This tool would also be great to show/discuss with parents about their child's reading habits at a conference.
