Science Mentor Text: The Everglades

I love sharing and learning about new mentor texts (it can get a little pricey, but at least get them all on your wish list!). I'm linking up with two of my favorites Amanda & Stacia for their Mentor Text Linky. I have chosen to share The Everglades by Jean Craighead George. Although this week's topic is science I plan to share how I incorporate this one picture book for multiple subject areas.
Science: ecosystems, habitats, animals, plants, environment, conservation, preservation, life science
Social Studies: Florida history, map skills, biography (Marjory Stoneman Douglas)
Writing/Language Arts: rich vocabulary, synonyms, descriptive writing, persuasive writing

This book is a non-fiction text about the history of the Everglades, but told with a narrative form by the perspective of the Indian storyteller. He poles through the "River of Grass" and tells the children of the history of the land, plants, and animals.

It's beautiful artwork and description will hook your students! The Everglades makes for the perfect read aloud!

Go link up with Collaboration Cuties and check out all the great mentor texts for science this week!
